Overview - Fast Facts

• History: James A. Rhodes Leadership Foundation (JARL Foundation) is named after Ohio’s longest serving Governor, James A. Rhodes who worked to expand accessibility of two-year colleges in Ohio. Seeing the need to expand the affordability for Ohioans to attend Ohio’s two-year community & technical colleges, the Foundation developed a scholarship program to provide Ohioans in-state community and technical college opportunities. The Foundation has been working with community and elected officials to address the needs of working families in Ohio who have a young adult who seeks a college education.

• Who We Are: The JARL Foundation is a 501.c3 that was created in 2002 by friends and family of the late governor. The JARL Foundation is an independent public foundation.

• An Endowment: To ensure that the fund remains solvent and able to serve Ohioans for decades to come, the JARL Foundation will operate as an endowment. In this manner, the fund will maintain a specific financial balance and expend the proceeds from tightly monitored, secure interest and sound investment for the scholarships.

• Financials: The JARL Foundation projects growing an endowment to meet annually, the needs of students across the state. The Foundation secured $10 million in state funding June 2007 and is raising an additional $55 million over the next three years. As an endowment, the fund will distribute funds through grants, scholarships and educational support each year. An independent auditor, accounting firm and investment management firm are employed by the JARL Foundation.

Who Is Eligible & What Are the Requirements?

• Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the scholarships. Applications not meeting these requirements will not be considered.

• Ohio resident students must have obtained or will obtain a high school diploma or GED, and will show proof of acceptance at an accredited 2-year Ohio institution of higher education recognized by the Ohio Board of Regents.

• Students are only eligible to win a two year college scholarship once.

• Upon receiving their Associate Degree or Certificate, students who receive a scholarship must work in their field of study within the state of Ohio for a period of four years. Those who leave the state for work or do not maintain the minimum grade requirements of a C+ will be required to repay the amount awarded. Said repayment amount will be added to the following year’s award total to ensure more Ohioans benefit.

When Will The Scholarships Be Awarded? The Foundation is scheduled to begin awarding scholarships to Ohio students in 2008. Scholarships will be paid directly to the Community or Technical College.

Selection Process: The scholarship recipients will be selected by an external, independent committee managed by the JARL Foundation.
